Goal 7 is a major issue in Kazakhstan, but the country has achieved some progress in environmental sustainability. They are making efforts to improve the legislation regarding the environment to meet the standards for international conventions. They have been collaborating with the Central Asian States to create a regional environmental policy. They have faced challenges with Target 3 as Kazakhstan suffers from a water deficit. Around 10% of households do not have a running water system. About 25% of the population does not have access to proper sewage systems. In order to make progress on this goal, Kazakhstan is going to have to modify the requirements for rural water supply facilities and improve the water supply networks. Kazakhstan has also faced challenges with Target 4 regarding the rural areas of the country. The living standard in rural areas is lower than that in urban centres. Because funding of small and rural villages is not economically beneficial, they often are neglected. In order to achieve Target 4, the government is going to have to invest in improving the living conditions in rural areas.
